The passage in Acts 2: 41-47 gives us an idea of how the life of Christians in the early church looked like, which is a good example for us. In one day the church grew by 3000 people (Acts 2:41). All of them were unified in the apostles’ doctrine, fellowship, in the breaking of bread and in prayers. In terms of location this took place at the temple and in homes (2:46).
In Calvary Chapel we gather as a church for Sunday services. This is like the meetings of early Christians at the temple. We also meet in homes for the purpose of:
1. “Abiding in the apostles’ doctrine” - studying the Bible is the most important part of home fellowships.
2. “Abiding in fellowship” - in home fellowships people get to know each other better, as a result of relationships they can serve each other more effectively .
3 “Breaking of bread” – Jesus commanded us to take communion in remembrance of Him, acknowledging His victory. Home fellowships are all about Jesus. Gathering in homes we recognize His presence among us and His headship of the church.
4. In Matt.18:20 its written: “For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them”.
5. “ in prayers…” – the essential privilege of the children of God is fellowship with Him through prayer. We come to God in prayer in home fellowships too.
Home fellowships can’t substitute Sunday services. They are part of church and God’s instrument to nourish our spirits during the week. Such fellowship was considered to be necessary by the apostles and the early church; we also hold to this view.
